Matthew Barhydt RA, LEED® AP

Matthew Barhydt is a Registered Architect and LEED Accredited Professional with more than 40 years of experience working on diverse project types, including new construction; historic preservation and rehabilitation; corporate and commercial interiors; high-end residential interiors; building envelope renovation and reconstruction; and primary, secondary and university facilities. In 2022, he left full-time architectural practice to pursue consulting opportunities and to devote more time to writing about architecture, art, and design— interests that originally led him to pursue a Master of Arts in Architectural and Design Criticism from Parsons/The New School while in his 30s. He has published articles in Progressive Architecture and Oculus. Mr. Barhydt also believes in the importance of “giving back” and is an active volunteer with Working in Support of Education (WISE), a nonprofit that provides specialized courses and resources for New York City public high schools. He has taught an annual seminar on Building Efficiency and Design, and has served as a judge and mentor for WISE’s Quality of Life Innovation program. Mr. Barhydt has also participated in the New School’s Alumni Mentoring Network.

As a Principal of the firm beginning in 2009, led a significant portion of the firm’s practice in historic preservation and rehabilitation projects, residential projects, and governmental agency work. Participated in the management of the firm and all phases of a project, from conceptual design through construction administration. Oversaw all of the firm’s projects with the National Park Service, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the New York City Department of Design and Construction. Coordinated all of the firm’s work in preparing technical reports and other documents for developers’ condominium conversion projects. Led the firm’s involvement with the ACE Mentor Group of Greater NY and was an ACE Mentor Scholarship Committee member. Responsible for some of the firm’s most notable projects, including: ● New Liberty Island Gift Pavilion (LEED Platinum Certified) ● Conversion of a 41-story rental building into luxury condominiums, including the penthouse design ● Historic rehabilitation of the National Park Service’s Ryan Visitor Center, a 1930s airport terminal building at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn ● Historic rehabilitation of multiple buildings for the National Park Service at Ft. Wadsworth, Staten Island, and renovation of Ellis Island dining facilities ● Design of a new glass dining pavilion for Ellis Island’s south terrace ● Reconstruction of St. Brigid-St. Emeric historic church in NYC’s East Village ● Conversion of a former high school into the Sheen Center for Thought and Culture, a performing arts complex in NYC’s NoHo neighborhood
