A Historic Train Station that DC Forgot? No, this beautiful historic station is a stop on the SEWER

A Historic Train Station in DC? No.

This historic station is a stop on the SEWER LINE.

When this landmark building from 1908 needed to be refitted as part of the modernization of the DC sewer system, structural engineering was critical.

New, 30-foot-wide, openings needed to be made in the existing brick bearing walls to accommodate new, bigger, equipment, and the work had to be done while the facility was fully operational.  The bearing walls were 4 feet thick and 100 years old.

Meanwhile, below, divers worked inside the flowing sewer main to weld critical valve fittings.  The fittings were designed by the engineering team to be constructable by a single welder, underwater, alone, in the dark.

And you thought your job was tough.

Toughest job I know?

Sewer Diver.  It's a thing.  Feeling brave?
