Mount Storm Power Station

This 1680 MW coal fired power plant is Dominion Power’s largest coal fired plant and also their largest plant overall. The work performed at the plant posed fascinating challenges in Forensic Structural Engineering and the mission-critical nature of the work meant that the schedule was almost as important as the physics underlying the problems. From a long span steel stair that behaved like a carnival ride due to harmonic excitation… To a crusher, where the vibrations produced seemed happy to destroy the thickest welds. The challenges we documented, researched, and solved.
