Coastal Design and Resilience Projects

City Pier A, Manhattan - A landmark restored.

Another of Mr Kelly's Adaptive Reuse projects, City Pier A, sits on the waterfront and was designed to resist hurricane winds and storm surge.  The renovation of this historic pier (c1882) was a challenge because of the pier's low elevation.

Could the historic cast-iron and timber structure be made to resist the forces required by the modern codes?

Hint: this picture is after Hurricane Sandy

The Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education

The Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education sits on the fragile Outer Banks, a system of barrier islands on the North Carolina coast, tied with Miami for the most hurricane landfalls.

This interactive museum was constructed to also serve as the local emergency shelter, which meant that it was to withstand a Category 4 Hurricane without collapse or endangering those sheltered.

Bridge inspections are critical to the health of our nation's infrastructure.

Mr. Kelly has inspected over 100 bridges for various state and federal agencies.

Bridges of all types were included, from simple timber spans to major highway bridges over navigable waterways.

Liberty Island Retail Pavilion and The Statue

The Liberty Island Retail Pavilion was designed to withstand hurricanes and achieve and LEED Platinum rating.

It was the first LEED Platinum building in our nation's park service and an elegant addition to the park.

Mr. Kelly served as structural engineer for the project.

Peter Koklanos, PE, SE, LEED AP was the LEED Consultant.

When it comes to Hurricane Resistance the FDR Four Freedoms Park takes the title.

Designed for a 500 year service life, this green monument was constructed of reinforced granite blocks weighing 36-tons and can resist 27-foot waves!

Over 12 Million pounds of granite was precisely placed, by Port Morris Marble, using one of the largest mobile cranes in the U.S.
