August 26 is National Dog Day, a day dedicated to celebrating one of our favorite four-legged companions. At SFE, we’re big fans of animals (although, admittedly, we do tend to gravitate toward cats), so we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to explore a fun intersection of pets, design, and engineering: “barkitecture”! As of 2024, more than 86 million households in the United States have pets, making it no surprise that homeowners are finding creative ways to make their spaces more comfortable and functional for their furry family members.
Barkitecture Trends: Designing for Our Four-Legged Family Members Since we’re a team of cat lovers, what better way to start off the “barkitecture” section than talking about our feline friends. Elevated cat spaces are a great way to make use of vertical space while giving cats a place to climb, hang out, and observe their surroundings. From wall-mounted shelves and catwalks to cozy window perches, these elevated features can add enrichment for cats while also becoming a thoughtful part of a home’s design.
Dog owners tend to deal with a little more dirt and mess than cat owners, so it’s no surprise that one of the biggest trends in “barkitecture” right now is the built-in dog washing station. These dedicated spaces can be incorporated into a convenient area like a laundry room, mudroom, or back porch, making it easier to rinse off muddy paws without bringing the mess into the rest of the house.
